How to Double Your Income and Savings This Year

How to Double Your Income, Savings And Net Worth This Year

It might sound like an ambitious plan but even if you don't fully double them, any increase will help, right?

Here's what I want you to do:

  1. Add up your assets vs liabilities to get your net worth.
  2. Review your income and savings for last year. Did you reach your goals? Are you earning what you want to be earning or working in the industry you want to be in? Do you wages match what someone in your role should earn? If you didn't reach your savings goal, what prevented you from achieving it?
  3. How can you make changes for 2026 to increase them all?
  4. Take action.
  5. Share your progress and tag us on Instagram or Facebook @thethriftyissue

Sounds simple, but how can you actually do it without stretching yourself too thin?

How to Increase Your Net Worth

You assets minus your liabilities equals your net worth. Ideally, you would work on increasing your net worth with options that can also increase your cash flow (meaning available cash coming to you).

For example, a positively geared rental property will provide profit through the rent which can be used as income or reinvested.

Shares generate dividends which can be used as income or reinvested and you can change that option at any time.

Businesses that are generating a profit should also be generating a wage for you as well as the profit.

All of these, and a few other things can generate income while increasing in value at the same time.

Other important things to increase your net worth:

Decrease your debt/liabilities e.g. credit card debt, personal loans etc.

The value of your home, superannuation, any collections and other things can be included too. Even though they don't generate income they do add to your net worth.

Why does cash flow matter?

Net worth is about how much everything you own is worth if you had to sell it all to pay debts and live. But you don't want to be in a position where you have to sell it all which is why cash flow is important.

Increasing your cash flow with your net worth provides a larger safety net should anything happen and it ensures a better lifestyle and retirement.

How to Increase Your Income

You do not need to take on a bunch of side hustles to increase your income. There are ways to do it without it taking more of your time and energy away from the things you want.

Read how to double your income for the tips from me.

Side hustles are an options but so are changing careers or companies, upskilling and getting a promotion, asking for a raise, negotiating benefits or other perks to be included if you can't get a promotion or wage.

Make sure you know exactly what you can claim on your tax because of your job too and get professional advice about how to reduce your tax and maximise any benefits that might be available through your job.

How to Increase Your Savings

If you aren't saving anything, start with 1% and increase it as you get used to it.

If you are doing the tips above to increase your income and net worth then use that. As your income grows, use 10% of the extra for whatever you want but focus on using the other 90% of your increase to save and invest.

I talk about this in the 21 habits wealth people use to increase their wealth.

How to Set and Achieve Goals

Do not worry if you set goals on NYE and they've already fallen away, even if they were goals for a year. Start again but this time create systems to help you do it. Habit stack by adding the habits you need to achieve your goals to a habit you already have.

Remember a year is only 365 days so you can start on ANY day and do whatever goal it is for a year from today. It does not have to be 2026 only.

My specific method that has helped me set and achieve my goals is here.

Use Atomic Habits and The 12 Week Year to help you create new systems and habits to achieve the goal.

What I Am Reading

My 2026 reading list is a little different because of the things I am doing and where I am living this year. Also, I grew increasingly frustrated with advice from people not living a similar life to mine. This year I specifically sought out female authors.

This is because I grew increasingly frustrated with many books written by men who had a wife handling everything for them or who were single. Meaning, their advice while good for some, wasn’t right for me at this stage of life (5 kids, their dad is a commercial diver so away a lot, teens who are champions so training, championships etc plus toddlers/young kids and a baby.)

As such, I sought out books on topics I enjoy or want to learn more about and that were written by women. Here is the list and you can find out more about why I chose each one here.
