How to Get Freebies and Discounts

How to Get Freebies

How good does it feel when you get something for free? While it can be true that most freebies have a catch, it's up to you to decide if that 'catch' is worth it or not.

If you do want to get some freebies, here are some ways you can:

  1. Enter competitions: It's not guaranteed you'll win so it might be a waste of time but last year I won thousands of dollars in gift cards and products, this year I have won a few hundred in the few I have entered so far. Admittedly, I am not entering as many this year but you have to be in it to win it! Get all my tips on entering and winning competitions here.
  2. Sign-up bonuses: Many companies offer a sign-up bonus either in the form of a discount or with places such as banks, it could be straight up cash e.g. $21 from Up which is backed by Bendigo and you get it as soon as you open an account.
  3. Pay it forward groups: There are various community groups on Facebook such as Pay It Forward or Free Stuff xyz Place if you look them up and join for your area you might be surprised by what is out there.
  4. Gift with purchase: These are designed to get you to spend more but if you plan your spending well, they can be a great way to get bonuses. Always compare prices and deals to ensure it is worth it. I've been able to combine free gift cards with clearance items and free gifts with purchase at times resulting in amazing items I use that cost me nothing. Check out how to get free gift cards.
  5. Government freebies: Check your state to see what freebies and discounts are available to you. I have an article about it all, links to each state plus national options here.
  6. Birthday Freebies: Over 200 places in Australia offer a birthday freebie or discount. It's my birthday this month so I am testing them all again but they were last checked in September for my teenagers birthday and they loved it.
  7. The Thrifty Issue Freebie Page: We share freebies and discounts all the time in our freebie section.
  8. Clothing: There are a variety of ways to get free clothes in this article.
  9. Other tips: Read 50 ways to live for free, how a family can live for free, how to travel for free and super cheap and lastly, how to get free and super cheap food.

Always remember though, it's not a saving if you are buying something you didn't need or want just because it's on sale or discounted!

When it comes to planning discounts and expenses, we do our big purchases around tax time for the end of financial year sales and around Black Friday/Cyber Monday. That said, there are always sales on and the discounts for those specific times aren't as big as they used to be. Use these tips for those times if you want to plan ahead though.
