For us, we bought some specific items before we left for the islands and the older kids knew these were their Christmas presents. On Christmas Day we will be in Vanuatu with that side of the family. It isn't a big celebration within the family, it's a day at our beach with food and fun, minimal gifts so we don't need to prepare or buy much.

The gift is us being there and we will pay for all the food plus use our bus to get to the beach. The family/tribe are ecstatic and it means our children learn more about their culture, their language and the tribe gets to connect with the future chief. It's the first time the grandparents (chief) have had all their children and grandchildren home so it's a big deal.

How to Make More Money

The festive season/end of year is a great time to pick up some extra cash. People who don't normally have a cleaner or gardener or babysitter often seek one out in these months as life can be hectic.

Check Airtasker, Facebook groups, community noticeboards and Gumtree for people looking to hire extra help. Or have a look on Seek if you want a casual job.

Alternatively, promote yourself and let friends and family know what you have on offer such as domestic services or something you are selling that could make a good gift etc.
