Since taking over The Thrifty Issue recently, I have tested some of the frugal tips and ways to make money to see how they are working today. Starting with the 80+ side hustles here, I am picking ones relevant to me or that would be easy for me to do. Here is what worked and what hasn't been so great for me. Bank BonusesEasy and some are instant but it is not ongoing. I looked for basic accounts, not credit cards. Up offers $21 instantly, ubank is $30 after a few transactions in your first month and ING has $100 on offer for new customers. I am checking a few others and will share those details soon. Minimal time and effort to open these and they are fee free so no issues. However, don't open a bunch of credit cards or loans to get opening bonuses! Online SurveysSince this is the thing many go to first as it is easy and has no entry requirements, I tested these first. Surprisingly, I have made a few hundred from Octopus Group and got a few offers for their Octoqual market research at a much higher rate ($90hr). There is an updated review here. PureProfile had a few but they took much longer, I got nothing from PrizeRebel yet, Swagbucks had a few ways to earn extra that were easy so I got to $25 fast. The ones recommended are here. Cash BackI had to buy a few things this month so I planned my shops. First, I did my research to find the best deals then checked cash back offers to see who offered the most. Coupert notifies you when you can get a better deal. This saved me hundreds AND I got some cash back. Using either one of those, combined with VIP/loyalty discounts made a huge difference. ResellingThis has been a bit hit and miss for me. Some things sold well, but for the most part people don't even read the suburb it is listed in if on Facebook. I will be trying a few other platforms this week to see if it is better but Facebook definitely frustrated me with reselling. I am also looking at things I can refurbish and flip but haven't started that yet. Cashed In CansThis is not something I want to do. I hated collecting them, storing them, transporting them, putting them in the machine. Hated it. I get that it is great for some and would absolutely help my kids do it if they wanted. Therr A kid is collecting in our area, so I pop mine out front for them and they get them on their way home from school. I prefer this as they are not stored at mine and this kid is so polite and helpful to neighbours etc. so I like supporting them. BabysittingThe rate where I am starts at $30hr for no experience, 1 child and goes up from there. Babysitting is not something I do often but do for a few families occasionally. They have 3 kids each, I get $40hr and the kids are great. Babysitting can be hard though and you do need to have first aid, CPR, working with children etc. InvestingThis one has paid off more than the rest recently. I have been investing in different things, nothing big at the moment but it has been interesting. There are many ways you can invest, it depends on how comfortable you are with risk and how involved you want to be. Saving MoneyWith the frugal tips, these are the main things I have done:
