Frugal Tips for Relationships: Dates, Gifts, Valentine's Day etc

I decided to focus on relationships for this email since it's Valentine's Day this month. Whether you are single, married, de facto, dating, or whatever, there are tips in here for you.

This week I am focusing on dating, making and saving money with Valentine's Day, gift ideas and relationship money tips. In other emails, I have covered how to get the money to leave an abusive relationship and tips for single parents.

Dates are not just for couples. You can do some of these ideas on your own for fun, in groups or if you've been in a relationship a long time.

Too many couples I know stop dating once they get married or move in together.

How to Make and Save Money With Valentine's Day

What to do When Your Partner is Hopeless With Money

Finances are a leading cause of divorce and relationship breakdown. If you are not on the same page financially it can be extremely difficult to achieve your goals.

In this article, I answer a reader's question and offer what I would do plus some tips around what I do to manage money in our home.

I'd also recommend reading how to survive when the cost of living keeps going up and 10 tips to stop spending if one of you is a spender.

How to get your family to save money can help too. Perhaps one of the hardest things to do for some, especially if you have been keeping up with the Joneses then decide you need to clear your debt or save for a house. Getting the rest of the family on board can be tricky but the tips in this one will help.

How the top 1% manage their money has helped many I know as well. I interviewed 4 Aussie families in the top 1% to find out how they managed their money. It is a long post but so much great advice and a lot of similarities between the families. Names have been changed to protect identities.

What I Am Reading

Since divorce and relationship breakdowns can be expensive, here are some relationship books to help:

The Seven Principles For Making Marriage Work by John Gottman is a great resource. As are his other books and The Gottman Institute. Another book of theirs is Fight Right which I would highly recommend for dealing with conflict.

8 Rules of Love: How to Find it, Keep it, and Let It Go by Jay Shetty is a wonderful read focusing on all types and stages of love rather than only a marriage.

Attached by Dr Amir Levine and Rachel S.F Heller, M.A. In my view, everyone should read this book as it is about attachment styles and can help you understand everyone better.

How to Do the Work: Recognise Your Patterns, Heal From Your Past and Create Your Self by Nicole LePera is important for everyone to read and actively do the work.

Tips to improve your relationship with money

Money Mindset Matters How you think about money directly impacts what you do with it. Our experiences growing up combined with life as it is now can determine if we are more likely to want to save or impulse buy. I grew up in a heavily religious household, my mum stayed at home and did the cooking, cleaning, sewing, running all 5 kids to everything etc. Dad worked for the government and did the outdoor stuff (plus made sure we, the kids, did our chores). We had a good house, got to play...
